Online Events for Common Field National Convening

04/25/20

Public Media Institute's Lumpen Radio Twitch channel will host public online after parties for the Common Field Convening, a national gathering of arts organizers that went virtual this year.

Common Field is a national network of independent visual arts organizations and organizers that connects, supports, and advocates for the artist-centered field. The Common Field network has 750+ members across 43 states. Programs include national convenings, grants, research, resources, forums, meet-ups and advocacy.

PMI will present concerts, games, and special guests as part of Common Field’s after-conference programming. Art space organizers from Chicago will present, hang out and share their stories with an international audience.

Following the Common Field Convening’s Saturday sessions, from 8pm until late, PMI will present a series of experimental after party events to gather far-flung attendees, and host concurrent online social spaces and performances via Twitch and Zoom. PMI hopes to foster the kinds of connections and conversations that happen after a day of panels at the real life conference. Concerts, games, break-out party rooms, special guests and more await, in an experience guided by Lumpen’s Jeremiah Chiu and Team Precariat’s Brandon Alvendia.

twitch.tv/lumpenradio will present live concerts as a multi-city connector, bringing together musicians from all over in a sequence of live performances for you to enjoy as you digest the learning and challenges brought up during the convening. Join Public Media Institute’s Lumpen Radio WLPN 105.5 FM community radio station as it expands for the first time into live-streaming concerts, interviews, participatory advice shows and more!

twitch.tv/teamprecariat introduces experimental art structures into the emergent live media space of internet streaming culture. The Twitch events will play with the conventions of conventions, team-building, forced creativity, managerial oversight, employee optimization through mindfulness, and "fun" in the workplace.

Zoom will be utilized as a public hangout space and experimental party zone. Using Common Field’s well-built Zoom infrastructure, break-out room roulettes, DJ sets, cliquing off, and cocktail parties will all be attempted if not perfectly replicated, as we try to find a way to make this work-imbued platform into a site of leisure and fun. Maybe it’s possible!

Sign-up for twitch and follow twitch.tv/lumpenradio & twitch.tv/teamprecariat to follow these after-parties and other weekly programming and hang outs.

The after party events for the 2020 Common Field Convening are supported by Brandon Alvendia, who runs @TeamPrecariat, and Jeremiah Chiu, who will host @LumpenRadio on Twitch, besides the Public Media Institute administrative team. Brandon Alvendia and Jeremiah Chiu are, respectively, the Quarantine Times Saturday and Wednesday editors. Each week, Brandon and Jeremiah each select a Chicagoan to share a commissioned creative response to the pandemic.
